At Dental Hygiene Centers, we love helping our patients make small changes that lead to a healthier smile. One of the simplest, yet most overlooked, habits is what you do after brushing your teeth.
Today’s Dental Tip Tuesday might surprise you:
Don’t rinse your mouth with water after brushing, just spit!
##### Why It Matters: The Power of Fluoride
Your toothpaste contains fluoride, a natural mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities. When you brush and immediately rinse with water, you wash away the fluoride before it has a chance to do its job.
By simply spitting out the excess toothpaste without rinsing, you’re allowing the fluoride to stay on your teeth longer, giving it more time to:
- Strengthen your enamel
- Protect against acids and sugars
- Reduce the risk of tooth decay
##### What Should You Do Instead?
- Brush for two full minutes with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
- Spit, don’t rinse , Let the remaining toothpaste sit on your teeth.
- Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after brushing to maximize fluoride benefits.
It’s a small change, but over time, it can lead to fewer cavities and stronger teeth , especially for children and adults at higher risk of decay.
##### Common Questions We Hear
Q: Won’t my mouth feel gross if I don’t rinse?
A: At first, it might feel a bit different, but most patients get used to it quickly. Try using less toothpaste if it feels like too much foam.
Q: Can I use mouthwash instead?
A: If you’re using a fluoride mouthwash, wait at least 30 minutes after brushing to use it, otherwise, it can rinse away the toothpaste’s fluoride. Your dentist may also recommend a specific rinse based on your needs.
