Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing): What It Is and Why Your Dentist Recommends It

From Your Locally Owned Southwest Florida Family Dentist, Dental Hygiene Centers, Fort Myers & Cape Coral

Have you been told you need a deep cleaning, also known as Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)? Don’t worry, it’s one of the most common and effective treatments we perform at Dental Hygiene Centers, your locally owned family dentist in Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

This gentle, thorough procedure helps stop gum disease, prevent tooth loss, and keep your smile healthy for years to come.

When Is a Deep Cleaning Needed?

Your gums are the foundation of your oral health. Over time, plaque and tartar can build up below the gumline, where a regular dental cleaning can’t reach. When this happens, bacteria cause inflammation and infection, a condition known as gum disease (periodontitis).

At Dental Hygiene Centers, our dentists Dr. Orozco and Dr. Rodriguez may recommend SRP if you experience:

  • Gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath or a sour taste in your mouth
  • Tender or receding gums
  • Bone loss or deep pockets detected during your dental exam

If gum disease isn’t treated early, it can lead to loose teeth or even tooth loss. A deep cleaning is the first step toward restoring gum health and protecting your smile.

What Happens During a Deep Cleaning (SRP)

Our team takes great care to make the experience comfortable and stress-free. Here’s what you can expect during your visit at our Fort Myers or Cape Coral dental office:

1. Localized Numbing for Comfort

We gently numb the section of your mouth being treated to ensure you stay completely comfortable throughout the procedure.

We typically clean one quadrant (one-quarter of your mouth) at a time, for example, your upper left or lower right side, so your mouth can heal comfortably between visits.

2. Scaling

Your hygienist removes hardened plaque and bacteria from above and below your gumline using advanced ultrasonic and hand instruments. This step eliminates the infection source and gives your gums a fresh start.

3. Root Planing

Next, the root surfaces of your teeth are smoothed to help your gums reattach and heal. This reduces pocket depth and makes it harder for bacteria to return.

4. Healing and Home Care

After SRP, your gums may feel slightly tender for a day or two. We’ll provide simple aftercare instructions and show you how to keep your gums clean at home.

Most patients notice less bleeding, fresher breath, and healthier gums within a few weeks.

How Many Visits Will I Need?

Most deep cleanings are completed in two to four visits, depending on how much buildup and inflammation are present.

Our team will schedule your visits strategically to ensure each area heals properly while keeping you comfortable.

You can also ask about our regular maintenance cleanings after SRP to keep your gums healthy long-term.
